Genetic diversity indicators

Indicators are needed to monitor the trends in conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources at global, regional and national levels. Such indicators are also relevant in the context of the European Genetic Resources Strategy (EGRS).

We reviewed the existing indicators already implemented by international institutions and networks, and other recently suggested indicators that have not been implemented yet.

Based on this analysis, we proposed key indicators within and across the plant, animal and forest genetic resources domains, covering:

  • in situ conservation of (native) populations, including crop wild relatives
  • ex situ conservation
  • sustainable use and diversification,
  • characterization
  • capacity building
  • monitoring of the national implementation process.

We suggested specific indicators relevant across domains:

  1. Genetic diversity indicatorswithin species: relevant for monitoring and management of both wild and domesticated species and populations
  2. Indicators at “landscape” or “ecozone” level, using georeferenced data, which allow for integration of plant, forest and animal genetic resources data.
