The main resources of the project will be a European Integrated Strategy for the Conservation and Use of crop, forest and animal genetic resources and GenRes Gateway - a user-oriented website to ease the navigation through the digital GenRes landscape.

GenRes Gateway

GenRes gateway will serve as an entry point to guide different users through GenRes landscape to help them find the information they are looking for – from guidelines on seed collection and genebank management to demonstration cases on how different breeding approaches affect genetic diversity. The Gateway will be launched in 2020 and available at this web address.

Integrated Strategy for genetic resources

ECPGR, EUFORGEN and ERFP networks, representing crop, forest and animal GenRes communities, have been operating during the past decades rather isolated, each of them collecting knowledge from member countries and creating own standards, infrastructures and a range of catalogues, guidelines and concepts.

GenRes Bridge will capitalise on the domain specific knowledge and resources and unite them to develop a European Integrated Strategy for the Conservation and Use of crop, forest and animal genetic resources which will represent the backbone for a European-wide approach to the conservation and management of GenRes. Furthermore, on a EU level, this strategy aims to complement the already existing EU Biodiversity Strategy by focusing on biodiversity for food and agriculture.

The Strategy will include an overview common to all three domains, with activities and resources that can be shared to support sustainable use of integrated ecological approaches from farm to landscape levels, innovation, resilience of farming and forestry systems, and the bio-based economy.

The Strategy will also include sections specific to each domain that will advance individual networks’ roadmaps.

Why a strategy?

There are several international policy frameworks calling for improvement in the conservation of crop, forest and animal genetic diversity. The Strategy aims to address these frameworks:

  • EU Biodiversity Strategy
  • Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (FOREST EUROPE)
